1. WHAT IS A MICROENTERPRISE?
A microenterprise is a business operated by a sole proprietorship or small partnership, employs five or fewer individuals, and requires very little start-up capital, usually less than $35,000. The average size microenterprise has just one or two people working in it. These enterprises are most often known as microbusinesses and/or home-based businesses.

2. HOW MANY MICROENTERPRISES ARE THERE IN RHODE ISLAND?
According to national microbusiness and home-based business experts, Paul and Sarah Edwards, Rhode Island has an estimated 10,000 microentrepreneurs. The Edwards' have reported that every day there are more people in the state who want to start a business because they are: a) unemployed; b) underemployed; c) transitioning off welfare; d) tired of an existing job; e) recently arrived in Rhode Island with work skills learned in another country; or f) are retiring from a career in another field.

3. WHAT SERVICES DOES THE RHODE ISLAND MICROENTERPRISE ASSOCIATION, INC. OFFER?
The Rhode Island MicroEnterprise Association, Inc. offers entrepreneurs with training classes, small business technical assistance, access to market services and training, and help in developing a business idea. Most services are available in a community located near most people living in the State of Rhode Island.

4. ARE ASSOCIATION SERVICES LIMITED TO ANY PARTICULAR GROUP OF PEOPLE IN THE STATE?
NO. The Association provides its services to ANYONE, regardless of race, color, ethnicity, language, national origin, sex, economic status, or residence. There are NO preferences given or offered. Everyone is treated equally and fairly.

5. HOW MUCH DOES THE ASSOCIATION CHARGE FOR TRAINING AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE?
RI MicroEnterprise Association, Inc. does not charge for microbusiness training classes or technical assistance. RI MicroEnterprise Association, Inc. believes that education is the greatest asset a person can acquire. RI MicroEnterprise Association, Inc. is fully supported by state and private funders to insure that all residents of the state who want to open or expand a small business have equal access to these important services.

6. WHERE ARE MICROBUSINESS TRAINING PROGRAMS OFFERED?
Microbusiness training programs are currently offered in the following communities:

  • PROVIDENCE'S SOUTHSIDE
  • PAWTUCKET
  • BRISTOL/WARREN
  • WARWICK/WEST WARWICK

7. WILL ANY NEW MICROBUSINESS TRAINING PROGRAMS BE OFFERED IN RHODE ISLAND?
Yes. New microbusiness training programs will be offered in the following communities before December, 2001:

  • Woonsocket
  • Providence-Washington Park
  • Providence- Olneyville
  • Central Falls
