The Rhode Island
MicroEnterprise Association, in partnership with community-based organizations
located throughout the state, provides free microbusiness training and
business technical assistance to persons wishing to start their own small
business. Our services are accessible by the owners of more than 10,000
microbusinesses and home-based businesses in Rhode Island.
YOUTH JOIN THE
MICROENTERPRISE REVOLUTION!
Oprah, J Lo and P Diddy are all entrepreneurs. They know how to make
building a business a part of their lives. Now two schools in Rhode
Island are plugging into a program in "Entrepreneurship…The Basics"
being taught by Ann Marie Marshall, director of the Rhode MicroEnterprise
Association and Prof. Kenneth Proudfoot of Johnson & Wales University.
Youth entrepreneurship is included as part of the high school curriculum.
Projects are in place in Introduction to Business classes at Shea High
School in Pawtucket and at the Cranston Area Career & Technical Center
in conjunction with culinary arts, financial and marketing students.
Young artists are also getting the business basics at ASS220's Broad
Street Studio.
R.I. MICROENTERPRISE
DELEGATION SPENDS BUSINESS DAY IN D.C.
Rhode Island Business Day 2002 put federal officials and Congressional
reps in front of advocates for microenterprise for a discussion of export
trade, social security reform and funding for small business. Anne Marie
Marshall attended R.I. Business Leaders Day forums hosted by Sen. Jack
Reed (D-R.I.) for discussions over the course of the day with leaders
who included Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R-R.I.), Sen Joesph Liberman (D-Ct.)
Sen. John McCain (R-Az.), Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.)
and Alan Greenspan, chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve.
STUDENTS EXPLORE
PATH TO LEADERSHIP AT YOUTH CAMP
Twelve R.I. high school students with disabilities took part in three
days of events at Camp Conanius in Exeter, R.I. at the first annual
Rhode Island Youth Leadership Forum. Students took part in educational
programs on developing self-esteem, choosing a career, recognizing the
history of disability as a culture, tapping into financial resources,
using technology to promote independence and developing a leadership
plan for success.
Help came from the MicroEnterprise Association and Johnson & Wales University
students, Adam Anthony, Michelle Kulinkowski, Reather Hollingsworth,
and Ralph Balsamo assisted Anne Marie Marshall with activities. Funding
for the leadership forum was contributed by the R.I. Department of Human
Services, Ocean State Center for Independent Living and the U.S. Department
of Labor, Office of Disability Employment Policy.
EIGHT GRADUATES
HONORED IN PAWTUCKET AND PROVIDENCE
Microbusiness graduates in Pawtucket and Providence were honored for
completing four-week programs in Starting Your Own Business. Providence
students awarded certificates at the International Institute of Rhode
Island are Pascal Madave, Kenneth St. Pierre, Dulce Mendoza. Students
graduating in Pawtucket are Maria Semendo, Svitlana Styckolshchykova,
Maria Nely Pires and Elisa De Oliveira.
